Space Situational Awareness and debris mitigation capabilities are needed to match the ongoing increase of space activity, and address the related safety and sustainability challenges. The Australian Space Agency Space Situational Awareness and Debris Mitigation roadmap (SSA roadmap) has been developed with the support of research and government agencies as well as industry to set a vision for industry growth and transformation over the next 10 years. The SSA roadmap advocates for the targeted development of Australian measures that address the risk of space object collisions and debris creation. It aims to generate the right ecosystem for a robust development of SSA in Australia. This presentation outlines unique opportunities in the focus segments identified as priorities for the Australian SSA community. In particular, research opportunities include enhanced modelling of orbit determination and predictions to reach the level of accuracy required for new services such as in orbit servicing; study of the effects of new satellite propulsion technologies; modelling for space weather events. International projects are key to further develop capabilities on resilient spacecraft, sensor technologies and data analytics. The presentation shows the ambition for SSA in and from Australia, backed with technology development and investment opportunities.
