The Australian Space Data Analysis Facility (ASDAF) was established to enhance Australian small to medium enterprise (SME) and researchers’ ability to use space data, initially remote sensing Earth observation (EO) data. ASDAF is a joint effort of the Curtin Institute for Computation and the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre funded by the Australian Space Agency and the WA State Government. ASDAF has two key areas of focus: to increase the space economy by providing analytics for commercialising space data and to increase the size of the workforce with training for access to and use of space data. We provide specialised (EO) analytics tools, training and capacity building, and facilitate knowledge and collaboration for the Australian space community. Since January 2021 ASDAF has engaged with over 1800 people from across Australian industry, Government, and academia to provide: i) direct training and education presentations on space data to over 1,000 people via a series of sundowners, webinars, and training events, ii) freely available training resources to assist novices start their EO journey via the ‘ASDAF Academy’ – a data science training initiative providing an introduction to the concepts, tools, and techniques used in satellite data analysis using an easy-to-understand, step-by-step approach, and iii) Space Science career information to over 800 students. From October 2021 ASDAF has received and assessed 19 requests for technical support for use of space data from Australian SMEs and researchers. 6 projects have been successful and collectively allocated $250,000 worth of specialist Remote Sensing Data Scientist time to enhance their products, and a data downloader and Space Data Directory are in production. In this presentation we will talk about the lessons learnt in establishing the facility and working across the Australian space sector with particular reference to the nexus between industry, Government & academia including challenges and gaps in the sector.
