The University of Southern Queensland has built a capacity for astronomical and space sciences research and development through collaboration. This approach is exemplified by Mt Kent Observatory, which although founded as a small teaching facility has grown through international and Australian partnerships into a multimillion-dollar research facility providing follow-up for the NASA Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite and hosting the Australian node of the DLR SMARTnet space debris optical tracking network. Our future efforts will continue to combine astronomy and space, with a focus on new space-based astronomy missions; the solar-stellar connection; linking planetary and exoplanetary science; and the translation of astronomical technology into space applications. A collaborative approach for Australian researchers is encouraged to help build our space industry, including leveraging the nation’s extensive astronomical research capabilities and international linkages.
